Responding to COVID-19 through ShelterCare

ShelterCare, providing health care and Shelter in one location, along with other supports, is seeing tremendous results.

A lot has changed since House of Friendship’s Friendship Dinner, where we launched our vision of ShelterCare.

Since then, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it new challenges – as well as new opportunities. House of Friendship’s Shelter program has moved to a hotel to provide the physical distancing needed to keep everyone safe. This, along with health-care supports, has led to early implementation of ShelterCare.

Many media outlets have captured this story:

Globe and Mail – Could shelter hotels be a model for addressing homelessness?

Waterloo Region Record: Kitchener hotel part of a better system for the homeless

CBC Kitchener: Kitchener men’s shelter looking for new home, funding so they can continue to serve homeless 24/7

Kitchener Today: ShelterCare allows people entering the shelter system to also have access to health care
