Roy didn’t know where to turn when he became homeless at age 65.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Roy has spent the past year looking for a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had worked most of his life, but was unable to work because of health problems. At age 65, he had few options left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t pay my rent, and I got evicted,\u201d said Roy. \u201cI\nwas on the street, with nowhere else to go, so I went to House of Friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he first arrived, no bed was available. Roy waited\noutside in the cold until 1 a.m. before a bed became available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was fall, close to winter. I was so grateful when I finally was able to come in. The staff were so great, and it was good staying there. The meals were good and we were taken care of.\u201d<\/p>Roy<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But, there was still the challenge of sharing a room with\nfive other men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I was at the Shelter, I had a bad chest cough for a\nlong time. It was hard to stay healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Roy is staying at a hotel as part of House of\nFriendship\u2019s Shelter program during COVID-19. It\u2019s a glimpse of what\nShelterCare could look like, with 24\/7 staff support, a health-care team in\nplace with both a daily clinic and rounds, and additional supports like help\nwith housing searches all in one location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSince I came here, I feel really much better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sleeping has also become much easier for Roy, who find it\ndifficult to get the rest he needed with the extra noise in the rooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m a very light sleeper,\u201d said Roy. \u201cNow that I\u2019m here,\nI\u2019ve had no problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roy hasn\u2019t yet used the health-care team on site, but that\nwill soon change. He will be having prostate surgery soon, and he will be\nrelying on the medical team at the Shelter program to help him during his\nrecovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roy is thankful for the support he has received, and hopes\nmore can be done to help others in his situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen how many homeless people are out there, and it\nhurts me,\u201d said Roy. \u201cI wish I had the money so that I could help people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roy has been approved for housing, but COVID-19 restrictions have meant that he has to wait before he can move in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, Roy is thankful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
