Joshua has received help to reduce his alcohol intake and is looking at a fresh start, thanks to ShelterCare.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLosing someone you love is a hard thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joshua, who lost his home and custody of his son over a few\nshort days, knows just how much this can hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to live. I just started drinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For 15 years of his life, Joshua has used alcohol as a way\nto cope when life got hard. It wasn\u2019t until the last year or so that he\nrealized he had a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was drinking 12 beers at a time,\u201d said Joshua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since he has been staying at House of Friendship\u2019s Shelter\nprogram at a local hotel, however, Joshua has been able to reduce his alcohol\nuse, with help from on-site medical staff who are managing his intake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI started with six beer a day; now I\u2019m down to three a day. By the time I get out of here, I want to be alcohol-free.\u201d<\/p>Joshua<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Joshua says that the support he has received while in\nShelter has made all the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not just a hotel,\u201d said Joshua. \u201cI plan on using\nevery bit of help there is here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the way Emergency\nShelter has been provided has changed. Men are receiving 24\/7 support, complete\nwith a health-care team to ensure everyone can stay healthy. This is the vision\nof ShelterCare brought to life. And we are already seeing its impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before entering the program at the hotel, Joshua was staying\nat the temporary overflow shelter, where he was able to have a mat to sleep on\nat night and food, but not much else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the hotel, he can rest at night and gets three meals a\nday. With help from staff, Joshua has been able to apply for ODSB and is\nstarting to look for a permanent place to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that having caring, supportive staff available to\ntalk to has made a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe people here don\u2019t judge you,\u201d said Joshua. \u201cI like how\na lot of the staff have been through what I\u2019m going through.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have hope now. I\u2019m slowly getting better. This place is giving me hope that I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d have. My goal, when I\u2019m better is to work for House of Friendship. That\u2019s what I want to do with my life now.\u201d<\/p>Joshua<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
