Mark lives with chronic pain. Getting health care while homeless has been vitally important to his well-being.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Mark has a long history of struggling with homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had made some progress back in 1999, getting support to find housing. He moved to London, and was beginning a new life when tragedy struck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 52-year-old was brutally beaten in a home invasion that\nnearly claimed his life, with brain swelling and bleeding, along with other\ninjuries to his leg. It took him more than a year to be released from hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s been in pain ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark has struggled with pain management, particularly during\nCOVID-19, when his regular nerve-block injections were cancelled. He\u2019s also had\ndoctors \u201ccut him off\u201d from pain meds, worrying that he was building up a\ntolerance. But without treatment, Mark is unable to manage his day-to-day life.\nHe was unable to work, and became homeless once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he stayed at House of Friendship’s Emergency Shelter, Mark was often unable to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had post-traumatic stress that was so bad, that every time a door opened or closed, I would be awake.\u201d<\/p>Mark<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Since the COVID-19 pandemic became a reality in Waterloo Region, however, the Emergency Shelter program has moved to a local hotel, where 24\/7 staff support is available, including other wraparound supports like health care and other agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing here compared to the shelter is so much better,\u201d said Mark. \u201cI can sleep at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark has used the health-care team to get connected to a\nlocal physician, and to get a handle on his pain management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe doctor here is excellent. She\u2019s got a good idea what living with chronic pain is about.\u201d<\/p>Mark<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He also has received antibiotics to help with a leg\ninfection that flares up from time to time, ever since he battled with\nlife-threatening necrotizing fasciitis two years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was able to get my medicine quickly, and I can stay\ncleaner here, with my own shower. It\u2019s making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u2019s now looking at getting permanent housing so that he can\nlive independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, he is grateful for the care he is receiving\nin this early model of ShelterCare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think its going a lot better here than at the Shelter,\u201d\nsaid Mark. \u201cI am getting much better sleep and it helps me to rebuild each\nnight, ready to begin again.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
