Alan never expected to be homeless. He had his own apartment\nand was working steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he learned that his apartment would be torn down, to be\nreplaced by condos. Shortly after this news, Alan found himself out of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He could no longer afford an apartment in Kitchener.\nEverything happened so quickly that he didn\u2019t know what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was on the street for a week, and then I decided, \u2018that\u2019s enough of that.\u2019 There was nowhere to lie down and nowhere to rest. I started to get paranoid.\u201d<\/p>Alan<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He came to the House of Friendship’s Emergency Shelter, looking for a place to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the shelter offered a place of rest, it came with its own set of challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a place to get off the street, but I just didn\u2019t like the idea of four or more in a room. It was too cramped, and people would argue and fight with each other.\u201d<\/p>Alan<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Since March, however, Alan has been staying in a hotel, as part of House of Friendship\u2019s Shelter program during the COVID-19 pandemic. He shares his room with one other man and is able to stay in the building 24\/7 \u2013 unlike the previous Shelter program, where hours were limited. Staff support is readily available, as is on-site health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the vision of ShelterCare come to life, because of the\nCOVID-19 pandemic. And it\u2019s making a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so much better here,\u201d said Alan. \u201cI can really rest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the pandemic was first declared, Alan was worried about\nwhat would happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has long struggled with mental health and anxiety, and\nthe uncertainty of living in a space with no room for physical distancing made\nhim nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t know how we would manage,\u201d said Alan. \u201cI\u2019m really thankful\nwe had a place to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While at the hotel, Alan has used health care after he\ninjured his wrist, receiving anti-inflammatories to help with the pain. He also\ntalked to the on-site doctor about his anxiety, learning different ways to\nmanage his worries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorry \u2013 that\u2019s a real killer, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has also used other on-site services like help to find permanent housing \u2013 something that would have been difficult to do if he had to go to a different location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would have to go on a bus to get help and because I don\u2019t have a cell phone, I might have missed getting a place to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alan is looking forward to moving in to his new apartment,\nand making a fresh start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce I get my place, and I\u2019m all settled in, I\u2019ll be able\nto look for another job,\u201d said Alan. \u201cI can start over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
