I’m Just So Thankful For You

Doug is so thankful for the support he receives from the Christmas Hampers program that he volunteered at last year’s Turkey Trucks.

For Doug, being able to get food from House of Friendship’s Emergency Food Hampers program has helped him make ends meet as a single father. It makes that much more of a difference during the holiday season.

“If it wasn’t for the Christmas Hampers, I wouldn’t have been able to celebrate Christmas with my daughter,” said Doug, who lost his job at Schneider’s and has been unable to find work since.

“It’s all about Sarah. I just want something there for her under the tree, and the turkey and Christmas Hamper makes it possible for me to do that. She’s such a good kid, and she deserves that.”

Doug volunteered at last year’s Turkey Trucks, supporting other families in need during the holiday season. He wanted to be able to give back to something that has meant so much to him.

Years ago, when Doug first moved to Kitchener, he stayed at House of Friendship’s Shelter. He knows just how easy it is for someone to fall on hard times, and need a little extra help.

“I just want to say how appreciated the Christmas Hamper program is,” said Doug. “I’m just so thankful to everyone who gives and volunteers.”

“When you get this hamper, it’s not just what’s in it. It lifts your spirits at Christmas. It helps you go on.”

This year’s Christmas Hamper program looks a lot different than in previous years because of COVID. Rather than volunteers packing and delivering boxes of food to homes and handing out turkeys, recipients are picking up their turkey and grocery gift card at pre-set locations in their neighbourhood.

Thank you for ensuring all community members will be able to share a holiday meal this Christmas!
