Your support of our preventative work in low-income neighbourhoods helps children and their families overcome the barriers that poverty creates – the odds that poverty stacks against them.
If your family is constantly struggling to put food on the table or dealing with inadequate housing or childcare, there isn’t enough time or energy to think about the long-term. It’s harder for children to succeed at school, to build strong social skills and to flourish, both now and in the future.
That hasn’t been the case for Fredlyne. Fredlyne is an active, lively 12-year-old in the Courtland Shelley community. In her spare time, she plays basketball, sharing her skills with friends, helps out at her summer church camp, and has acted in a school play. She capped off a stellar year by being class valedictorian.
Being part of House of Friendship’s Courtland Shelley Community Centre has made a wonderful difference for her.
By supporting House of Friendship’s Neighbourhoods programs, you are helping children like Fredlyne overcome the odds. Research is clear that when a child grows up with challenging economics, environment or experiences, they are likely to experience poorer health, a shorter life span, less education and enjoy fewer opportunities as adults.
Your support of our preventative work in low-income neighbourhoods throughout Waterloo Region is changing these odds – thank you!
We are thankful for this community’s growing support of this work.
As an example, the Astley Family Foundation is funding our After-School Mentorship program at our four community centres for the next two years, building skills in vulnerable youth that will help change their futures.
Join us in this work as together we begin to change the odds in greater ways! You can learn more about Neighbourhoods programs here:
